The ESOL Team provides English language tuition to the adults of some of the refugee families King’s Arms Project supports. The English Language Club is an informal English learning environment based in Bedford town centre.
We’re seeking volunteers to support the ESOL Tutors at the English Language Club.
No previous teaching experience is necessary for these roles – just an openness to helping refugees and other migrants improve their English. Is there a role for you? Take a look below.
Holiday Club Assistant
What will you be doing?
You will assist the ESOL Tutors and creche staff with the running of activities with small groups of children including:
- Assist the ESOL Tutors with the holiday club activities including outdoor games, crafts, board games, singing, snack time and supervising the children during story time.
- Helping children improve their English.
- Working with, and reporting back to the ESOL Tutors and ESOL Team Leader.
- Assist in setting up and setting down the holiday club before and after each day.
When and for how long?
- Half-term holidays and the first week of school holidays.
- Monday to Thursday between 10am-12:30pm).
- Days and weeks helping to be arranged with ESOL Team Leader.
- 6-month commitment minimum requirement.

Language Club Assistant
What will you be doing?
You’ll assist the ESOL Tutors with the following:
- Assist the ESOL Tutors with leading small group discussions in English with the students.
- Advice and information on cultural awareness & life skills.
- Working with, and reporting back to the ESOL Tutors and ESOL Team Leader.
- Encourage the students to acquire study skills (e.g. file, organisation, independence).
- Assist in setting up and setting down the classroom before and after each lesson.
When and for how long?
- Fridays between 10am-12pm on a weekly basis.
- We would need volunteers to arrive at 9.30am.
- 6-month commitment minimum requirement.

Classroom Assistant
What will you be doing?
You’ll assist the ESOL Tutors with the following:
- One-to-one support for individual students within a classroom setting.
- Advice and information on cultural awareness & life skills.
- Working with, and reporting back to the ESOL Tutors and ESOL Team Leader.
- Encourage the students to acquire study skills (e.g. file, organisation, independence).
- Assist in setting up and setting down the classroom before and after each lesson.
When and for how long?
- Commit to one day a week (Monday to Thursday between 10am-2pm) to be arranged with ESOL Team Leader.
- 6-month commitment minimum requirement.

Supervision
One-to-one staff supervisions are completed every 4-6 weeks in order to give opportunity to talk through successes, challenges, development/training needs, and other work-related issues as they arise.
Training
Regular on-going training is provided within work hours in the following contexts: Project-wide team training, suggested reading and opportunities for regular professional training. King’s Arms Project allows volunteers to attend our professional training courses when possible, free of charge. Training will be discussed with you during support sessions with your supervisor.
Expenses
Volunteer roles are unpaid, but we can reimburse volunteers for travel costs.
