Hussain’s Pathway to Employment:
Hussain came to the UK from Afghanistan on a government scheme to protect military personnel who had supported UK forces. In his hometown, he had been a skilled carpenter, running his own business. But arriving in a new country, with a different system and no local work experience, he struggled to find employment.
Through Pathways, our team worked with Hussain to help him regain confidence and access opportunities. We connected him with a local care home that was looking for a maintenance worker. Before his interview, Hussain gained hands-on experience with King’s Arms Project maintenance team, learning the specific skills he would need and building practical knowledge.
When he attended the care home interview, he impressed the employer with the skills and confidence he had developed. Hussain is now undertaking two weeks of voluntary work with the care home, with the aim of securing a full-time contract at the end of the month.
Pathways — Supporting Skills, Confidence, and Belonging
Hussain’s story reflects the heart of Pathways, a growing community where people facing multiple challenges — including resettled refugees, those recovering from homelessness, mental health difficulties, or substance misuse — can gain confidence, rediscover their value, and build practical skills.
Pathways offers a wide variety of courses and activities, including:
- Job-related skills and work experience
- Budgeting, tenancy retention, and goal-setting workshops
- Social activities, cooking, and weekly fitness classes
Our courses are organic and learner-focused, shaped by the priorities and needs of each individual. We use a strength-based approach, celebrating the skills and experiences participants bring with them, while fostering a supportive community where everyone can learn from one another.
Hussain’s journey is a perfect example of how Pathways helps people turn potential into opportunity, and make a positive start in a new country, building both skills and hope for the future.
