Winter Night Shelter Shift Leaders

Shifts: Evening shift (6pm-11pm),  and/or Morning shift (6.45am-8.30/9am)
Period of Time: 1st December 2025 – 16th March 2026
Contract type: Bank worker
Pay:  Hourly rate of £12.75 + 1.62 holiday pay = £14.37 per hour

Location: 56 Harpur Street, Bedford, with some additional travel to clients homes across Bedfordshire

Closing Date: Monday 10th November 2025

Interviews: Wednesday 12th November, Thursday 13th November, Friday 14th November 2025

Training Dates:

17th November 7-9pm Training for all volunteers and shift leaders20th November 7-9pm Shift Leader training24th November 7-9pm Training for all volunteers and shift leaders27th November All day Shift Leader First Aid training

 

Winter can be the toughest time for our homeless community and the impact of cold weather can even put lives at risk for those sleeping rough on our streets.

The Bedford Winter Night Shelter is going to provide a vital place for our homeless community to find a free, warm, safe place to stay, and is going to be delivered at our community hub in Harpur Street, Bedford opening 7.45pm- 8am Monday-Sunday from December 1st 2025, to March 16th 2026.

 

About the role

The role of shift leader is an important part of the success of the Winter Night Shelter. Working with a team of volunteers you will set the rhythm and tone for the evening. You will provide a welcome to volunteers, making sure they are briefed and ready to assist our guests. You will welcome guests and register/risk assess helping to ensure that risks presented by guests to volunteers and other guests are minimised. You and the volunteer team will provide meals and help guests to access their sleeping arrangements for the night.
